Cicatrix is a series of digital photographs centered around the traumatic brain injury that I sustained in 2021. I often think about the complicated impact it has had on my life, outlook, and relationships. I am deeply intrigued by the workings of the human brain and memory. This my most elaborate project about the experience.
In the images, I draw from memories of the injury and my subsequent recovery as well as the physical reminders that I hold onto. I relate this to my current state, creating a photographic memoir that deals with processing, growth, and vulnerability. When I started the series, I struggled with confronting the memories, but as I created images and spoke with my loved ones, I gained a fuller picture of my injury and its impact. I began to focus on the growth that I had made and the people and passions that helped me along the way. I aim to show the breadth of emotions that come along with processing trauma.
I hope that those who have been through similar events can take solace or feel recognition when viewing this series. I also aim to illuminate the visible and invisible scars that shape the human experience.
